Former UVa Basketball Player Jamil Tucker Helps Propel Albemarle HS Basketball

Posted: Updated:

Former Virginia basketball player, Jamil Tucker, has taken his love for the game across the pond to play pro in Europe but now he's back in Albemarle County as the assistant coach of the Albemarle girl's basketball team.

Tucker said the decision was easy because of his history at UVA and added, "Basketball is a part of me. It's not coaching or just being a player - basketball is just a part of who I am."

The Patriots say they already see the program evolving.

Sophomore Kendra Hairston said, "I've seen it change a lot. I think we're quicker, stronger, we work together better and we're basically more of a family."

Senior Dionna Corbin added, "He's like a father, he always brings us up like every time he sees us he's like I love you - he loves us."

Albemarle's head coach, Rachel Proudfoot said, "As a head coach, if you can turn your back and see your drill being ran by an assistant the exact same way you want it ran, we know there's growth everywhere around the gym."

Coach Tucker says dishing out advice is second nature to him because he's been in their shoes.

Tucker said, "taking what you know and giving it to other people because its not all about being about yourself. If you're not giving anything back then you're not really doing anything"

Like any job, coaching at Albemarle hasn't been that easy. Most days he arrives late to practice because he's working multiple jobs so he can volunteer the hours so he can become the best coach he can be.

Tucker said, "You always want to advance but the thing that's big for me is just being able to find a foundation here first."

As his basketball expertise continues to rub off on the team, he hopes to end his first season at Albemarle with a bang.

Tucker said, "I believe that we have a ton of talent here and we have the pieces to become a championship team."
