Prayer Shawls for Sandy Hook Community

Posted: Updated:

A Charlottesville church is sending heartwarming holiday gifts to the survivors of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut where a gunman killed 20 students and six staff members earlier this month.

The knitting and crocheting group at Belmont Baptist Church set out last Sunday on a mission to help the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. Now they are sending hundreds of tiny squares of hope to Newtown Connecticut.

The knitting and crocheting group at Belmont Baptist Church is sending an unbreakable gift to the Sandy Hook community as it mourns the loss of 20 students and six staff members.

Becky Bowers, one of the prayer shawl makers, said, "Our pastor has been doing Christmas presents that don't break, and he's been talking about hope and joy and peace - and just those messages made us feel like we needed to do something."

The church group set out to create 500 pocket prayer shawls - one for every student, teacher and administrator at Sandy Hook. The congregation prayed for the victims and blessed the shawls during Sunday's worship service.

They hope to lift the spirits of Newtown Connecticut not only with their prayers, but also with every stitch.

Bowers said, "Every stitch that goes into it, there's a lot of love and prayers that go into that prayer shawl. It just gives them that warmth and the comfort of knowing that people care about them and they're not going through their situation alone."

With some help from Currioman Baptist Church in Montross Virginia, Belmont Baptist has put together 288 pocket prayer shawls so far, which means they still have 212 more to make.
