Haven Holds Homeless Memorial Service

Posted: Updated:

On this first day of winter, people are taking time to remember Charlottesville's homeless community.

The Haven hosted its annual homeless memorial service Friday afternoon. It is a time to remember those in the homeless community who have passed away, raising awareness about the effects of homelessness.

Stephen Hitchcock, the program director at The Haven, hopes this will make the issue more visible to those who often overlook it. "Somehow to me it's that encounter of both seeing and being seen that we can move forward as a community. And my hope for this community is that we learn how to care for our marginal ones," he stated.

The somber service also featured uplifting words of hope and personal reflections on homelessness.

Similar vigils happen every December 21 across the country.
