Albemarle Sees Increased Gun Sales since Connecticut Shooting

Posted: Updated:

Gun sales, in Albemarle County and around the country, are skyrocketing since the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, and so are calls for both assault rifle and high capacity magazine restrictions.

The owner of Albemarle County Firearms, Mike Brookman, says that last Christmas season, he sold 15 to 20 firearms a day. Now, he's selling nearly double that amount. The shop is sold out of almost all rifles and semi-automatic handguns.

"There is panic that some sort of new legislation is going to come down on Capitol Hill that's going to prevent people from exercising their second rights," Brookman said. "So there is a definite sense of, ‘I must do this now.'"

Brookman says new and previous gun owners are lining up before he opens his store every day, clamoring to buy firearms. He says he has also sold a tremendous number of locking devices and gun vaults to make sure those guns don't fall into the wrong hands.
