Ruckersville Funeral Home Holds Holiday Remembrance Service

Posted: Updated:

The holidays aren't easy for those who have lost loved ones. Especially not for Trudy Dyer who lost her mother, father and husband all within the last four years. But now, thanks to Ryan Funeral Home, she has found a new way to celebrate with them.

Tuesday night was the Ruckersville funeral home's second annual remembrance service. People came to celebrate lost lives and reflect on the past.

"It hurts but it brings back so many memories, just memories," said Dyer. "It's hard, but you know, this makes it get through. You can get through this because, knowing that you can come here and share Christmas with them."

Sarita Ryan Powers, owner of Ryan Funeral Home, said, "Sometimes it helps with that closure and gives them a little more peace, and they realize too that ‘I'm not going through this alone.' That other people are experiencing a death as well."

The service provided words of comfort through message and prayer. The highlight was a candlelight vigil to celebrate those who've passed on.

"It's such a joy, it's such a peace, it's such a loving atmosphere here and it's just Christmas, it's the Christmas spirit here. It's the holiday, it's love, it's peace, it's joy, it's celebration of the ones you love," said Dyer.

It was a chance for the community to get together and show support, and to remind each other to take it one day at a time. People who attended the service say they find peace in knowing they are not alone.

"It's just good for us as a community to get together to remember them," said Steve Smith, who attended the service.

"It continues, even when they are not here. It still continues within us, within our heart it continues," said Dyer.

At the service, each family received a special ornament as a keepsake. Powers recommends coming up with new traditions during the holidays that honor the person who has passed on.
