This holiday season you've made your list, you've checked it twice, and now it's time to check it again to make sure it has the right kinds of items.
Toys are popular gifts for kids, but the right kind of toy or game can be both fun and functional for a growing brain. That's why LearningRx has released this year's annual Smart Mom's Toy Box. It's a list of toys, games, and activities that will improve children's learning skills, while still providing them with a lot of fun.
The idea is that kids can get smarter by exercising their brain, and it couldn't hurt for the adults who are playing with them as well.
The items on the list focus on cognitive skills like auditory and visual processing, memory, logic and reasoning, processing speed, and attention.
"It's important because all of those skills combined allow a child to be able to pay attention at school, demonstrate on tests, auditory skills are important for learning to read and being a strong reader," said Megan Davis, an advanced trainer at LearningRx Charlottesville.
Most of the items are for children ages 8 and up. Puzzles, Mancala, memory matching, Chess, and Bop It are just some of the games on the list.
