Monday, Charlottesville City Council will take up a construction extension for a new YMCA in McIntire Park.
Construction on the building was supposed to start within five years of the lease agreement. That deadline is January 15. A series of court battles has stalled the project, and now the YMCA wants another year to break ground.
"It's really frustrating because every day that goes by that they don't build the YMCA is another day that we don't have a second pool. We don't have gym equipment," said Charlottesville City Councilor Kristin Szakos.
The delay means a 3.2 percent jump in construction costs. The price tag now stands at $14 million. While $9 million has been raised, the rest will have to be financed.
A group of private fitness club owners is suing Charlottesville and Albemarle County over public procurement issues. The earliest an opinion from the state Supreme Court could be released is January 11. City council starts Monday at 7:00 p.m.
