Augusta & Greene Investigators Searching for Antique Stores Burglar

Posted: Updated:

Investigators in Augusta and Greene counties are searching for a burglar who broke into two antique stores overnight, stealing thousands of dollars worth of fine jewelry.

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says a burglar stole more than $45,000 worth of jewelry from the Factory Antique Mall around midnight Sunday in Verona.  Two and a half hours later and across the mountain, Greene County investigators believe the same burglar got away with more than $75,000 worth of goods from the Antique Mall in Ruckersville.

Sgt. Rodney Snead with the Greene County Sheriff's Office said, "We do think there's a connection.  Both of them was pretty quick, they went in and out very quick and both had the same motive as far as smashing doors going.  They went straight to the jewelry case, didn't bother nothing else at all."

At both locations, entrance ways were busted in and the cases holding the jewelry were shattered.  The burglar was in and out of both businesses within a matter of minutes.

"We're looking at the similarities between the case and trying, and the people investigating the case here are talking to the people that are investigating the case there and we're trying to link the two and figure out you know all the facts that we can," said Augusta County Sheriff's Office Deputy Donald Smith.

Surveillance cameras caught the burglar coming and going from the businesses, but the sheriff's offices say the person's face was covered, so they do not have a description.  State police reportedly found some empty jewelry boxes at the Interstate 64 rest area near Ivy.

The Factory Antique Mall in Verona is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.  Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000.
