Fishersville Shooting Suspect Faces Possibility of Murder Charge
The suspect in a Fishersville shooting is back in court on Wednesday with a new defense attorney.
Jerad Michael Ross, 23, now faces the possibility of a murder charge, since the victim of the shooting last May has died. Wednesday was to be the trial date for Ross who has faced a charge of attempted murder.
The case was delayed last month when Ross fired his court-appointed lawyer. Since then, victim Melvin Jordan, 48, died and prosecutors have not yet shared the cause.
They do say Ross is a Bloods gang member from Maryland, but Ross has never been charged with a gang-related offense.
He faces felony counts of malicious wounding and attempted murder. Jordan was shot several times in the front lawn of the Skyline Motel in Fishersville. Investigators say he spent weeks in the hospital, and was still going through rehabilitation at the time of his death.
Jordan lived at the motel and worked there as a handyman. Friends and family members set up a makeshift memorial outside his room.
At Wednesday evening's hearing, a judge will likely set a new trial date and prosecutors may reveal their next step. Pursuing a murder charge would require them to prove that Melvin Jordan's death was a direct result of the May shooting.
