Fluvanna County's Ya Ya Anderson Rises Quickly at Radford

Posted: Updated:

Like any true freshman, Ya Ya Anderson was a little shy around his new Radford basketball teammates when he started school back in the fall.

RJ Price said, "he was a little quiet he wasn't really being himself."

Anderson added, "I was quiet because I didn't know how they were going to take me in."

But the Fluvanna County high school basketball star is adjusting to his new family at Radford just fine.

Price said, "when he came in we just told him to keep the same confidence look to score because we need him to score."

Anderson has played in all 10 of the games and is averaging nine points per game.

Anderson said,"the speed of the game is a lot faster than high school so you gotta have endurance - its just a big transition."

Even though its his first year with the Highlanders, head coach Mike Jones says the team looks up to him.

Jones said, "When you find guys that really understand the game and have a high IQ and they can make plays for not only themselves but for other people - then you know you have a good basketball player...he's not afraid to tell guys what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear. That's a quality a lot of people don't have, especially as a freshman."

That leadership is already shining through.

Anderson hopes to make it to at least 3 NCAA tournaments as a Highlander.

Anderson said,"Everyday I'm going to come in and push my teammates to reach that goal and hopefully we'll be able to do that this year and upcoming years too."

He says college ball hasn't been a stroll through the park.

Anderson explained, "I feel old, it's a long season, you're going to practice and school. It wears and tears at your body."

But the Palmyra standout is eager to put in the hours to make an impact on the Radford Basketball program.

Anderson said, "we're all just one unit and we all work together and got the same goal."
