Albemarle Schools Hear from Parents on Redistricting

Posted: Updated:

Monday night, Albemarle County parents let school administrators know how they felt about plans to redistrict schools to help fix an overcrowding problem.

The meeting was all about the families. The redistricting committee sat and listened to every parent who wanted to voice an opinion on the plans to improve the overcrowded Agnor-Hurt Elementary School.

"So tonight, really it's an opportunity for the parents to share their voice and their voice really matters to us. I think once relationships have been established with schools it is hard to leave but I trust that in our division we truly want the optimal learning spaces for all children and this is an effort to take care of that long-term," said Michele Castner, principal of Agnor-Hurt Elementary School.

The redistricting committee went over the options before opening the floor to parents. Those options included moving 60 to 100 students to Woodbrook, Greer and Broadus Wood elementary schools, posing potential problems for some families.

"Well we're likely to move to Broadus Wood and of course it's going to be a transition for us and we're going to be going from a very diverse school to much less so and from a large school to a small school, so it's going to be a challenge for us," said parent Alice Riccabona.

Concerns about diversity, distance and the impact that moving schools would have on the children were brought up the most, especially since administrators and parents say students don't realize that they are overcrowded.

"From the students' point of view, they have no idea because I have an excellent staff and they make everything run so smoothly and it's joyous and happy in every corner of the room," said Castner.

The committee will take Monday night's feedback and meet again. They say they will not make a decision until everyone has been heard.

Tuesday, Albemarle County will have another meeting about redistricting at Meriwether Lewis Elementary School.

The committee wants to make sure everyone has a chance to weigh in, so there will also be an online survey that will go live on Tuesday.
