Monticello Offers $5 Admission for UNESCO Site Celebration

Posted: Updated:

Monticello and the University of Virginia are celebrating 25 years as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites.  Now, Monticello is harkening back to the prices of yesteryear.

Monday, Monticello general admission tickets only cost $5, which is the price in 1987, when Thomas Jefferson's home was named to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

UNESCO honored Monticello and the university because of how the designs reflect Jefferson's ideals and interests.

Thomas Jefferson Foundation CEO Leslie Greene Bowman said, "We're the only historic house museum in America, certainly the only presidential home that's inscribed on UNESCO's list, and we thought that was worth celebrating 25 years later, so we've had more than double our attendance the last few days."

The $5 admission fee continues through Tuesday.  Visitors can also check out the holiday decorations now decking the halls of Monticello.
