Dozens of people tailgated Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, but not for a sporting event. It was a tailgate and donate event for the Silver Lining Blood Drive at Saint Anne's Belfield Upper School.
The blood drive was in memory of Becky Silver, a Charlottesville woman who died of leukemia last year. Silver's son, Nathan, says the blood drive is important because he saw how much his mother needed transfusions when she was sick.
"I just remember for about three years seeing my mom in hospitals a lot and how much platelets and blood that she needed to survive, and you know I just know in the back of my mind I always knew that that was because of the kindness of others," he said.
Even University of Virginia football coach Mike London stopped by the tailgate to donate. The blood drive set a goal to collect 180 units Sunday.
