A permanent memorial at Virginia Tech is honoring a campus police officer killed in the line of duty.
About 250 people attended a service Saturday in Blacksburg to unveil the Hokie stone etched with the name of Officer Deriek Crouse.
A student from nearby Radford University ambushed Crouse one year ago as he was working a traffic stop. The gunman later killed himself.
"Although it feels like a week ago, it's hard to believe that it's been one year. But we're still sad, we still feel a sense of loss. But all this to remember Deriek, it really warms my heart," said Virginia Tech Police Officer Kendra Cline.
Crouse's wife, children, and extended family attended Saturday's memorial. The stone marker is located at the spot where Crouse was killed.
