‘The Big Give’ Provides Free Gifts and More in Fishersville

Posted: Updated:

The first people arrived at Augusta Expo in Fishersville to camp out just before midnight Friday for The Big Give.

Donations of gifts, clothes, and groceries from more than 50 churches and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank made the free give-away possible.

"We don't see these people that need help because they're not congregated in a big thing but yet we rub shoulders with them every day," said Tanya Gigliotti, founder of The Big Give.

Sue Strickler is raising five grandchildren on disability social security, so she turned to The Big Give for Christmas shopping. She lined up in Fishersville with thousands of other families on Saturday.

"It's a challenge but we're all together. I'm there for them and I don't want them to feel like somebody else is going to step out of their life," said Strickler.

She tried to get holiday help from the Salvation Army, but says she was denied because she didn't have a court document saying the kids were under her care. So she went to The Big Give, planning to pick out gifts for her grandchildren and one for herself.

But when it came time for Strickler to choose something for herself, she still thought of the kids.

"I really needed the neck pillow thing because I have some trouble here in my neck but I needed the first aid kit for the grandchildren because there's always a booboo."

In a room where people could take as much as they could carry, Strickler took only what she needed. She said when her kids grow out of the clothes they got Saturday, she'll donate them back to someone else.

Items left after The Big Give will go to a similar event in Northern Virginia next weekend.
