Virginia's democrats have selected the first African-American to lead the party.
The state party's Central Committee unanimously elected Alexandria Delegate Charniele Herring as the party's new chairwoman at a meeting in Williamsburg on Saturday.
The three-term delegate succeeds Brian Moran, who decided not to seek another term.
Upon her election, Herring said she is "humbled by the strength and diversity" of Virginia's Democratic Party.
