UVa Point Guard Jontel Evans Out for Saturday's Game

Posted: Updated:

Virginia point guard Jontel Evans will not play in Saturday's game against Mississippi Valley State.   He re-aggravated the injury to his surgically repaired right foot in Wednesday's game against Tennessee.

Freshman Tevin Jones is expected to start in Evans' place Saturday.   Evans has already missed five games this season recovering from off-season surgery to that foot, but he appeared to be close to full strength in Virginia's game last weekend against Wisconsin-Green Bay with a team high seven assists playing 23 minutes.

Tevin Jones is averaging 5 points and 3 assists per game since serving a three game suspension at the start of the season for violating team rules.

Virginia has won six straight games since Jones has returned, and the team has played its best with both Jones and Evans in the lineup.

Jones said after the Tennessee game, "I would say having two point guards makes a big difference. The energy that me and Jontel bring that definitely makes a difference and we get into our offense quicker and defensively we are better on the ball, and that definitely makes a difference."

Virginia and Mississippi Valley State tip off at 4pm Saturday.
