STAB Closes 1 Campus Due to Illnesses

Posted: Updated:

It is flu season and schools can be breeding grounds for spreading the illness. St. Anne's-Belfield in Charlottesville has been hit hard with sickness, hard enough to shut down the Greenway Rise campus on Friday.  The school says they have experienced significant absences due to illness this past week.

School officials say on Monday and Tuesday between 40 and 50 students were either out sick or had to leave classes early because they started to feel sick. By Wednesday, that number almost doubled with 80 students and six upper school faculty members out due to the sickness. Thursday that number increased once again.

Mike Waylett, the associate head of the school said, "Our upper school has a population of 350 students and to have 100 students missing is pretty significant, especially with small classes to begin with, so we thought it was probably important to remove the kids from the building."

This is only affecting the Greenway Rise campus, classes were held as normal for all students in pre-school through eighth grade at the schools other campus.

Friday the housekeeping staff will be thoroughly cleaning all the buildings to help stop the spread of germs.

Waylett says, as of now, classes will be back on for Monday.
