The UVa women's basketball team shot just 25 percent from the field and lost its ACC Opener at ninth ranked Maryland 79-55.
Tiana Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas each had 20 points for Maryland. The 'Hoos were led by Ataira Franklin's 15 points. Jazmin Pitts had 11 and Sarah Imovbioh scored 10.
Virginia has lost 13 of the last 16 games to Maryland, but this was the most lopsided win in the series since the Cavaliers lost by 27 to the Terps in 2007.
The 'Hoos were out rebounded 50-39 in Thursday's loss.
Cavalier coach Joanne Boyle says, "You can tell your team everything, you're not going to out jump them, that they're physical, they were plus 20 on the boards on everyone, and don't try to out jump them and put a body on them, we talked about it, we ran drills against it and we just went out there and we just stayed in a funk."
UVA forward Jazmin Pitts said, "We definitely need to find ourselves in the next ten days, and see if we really want to do this or not because its going to be a battle come ACC time, it was tough because they were sending everyone to the boards it was just a battle down there."
Virginia falls to 5-3 with the loss. The Cavaliers are now on an 11-day break for final exams before hosting Coppin State on December 18th.
