UVA Men's Basketball Tops Tennessee 46-38 and Continues Winning Streak

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's basketball team won its 6th consecutive game as they topped Tennessee 46-38 at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

The Wahoos led the Volunteers 25-16 at halftime, but the Volunteers would try and make a comeback late in the 2nd.

Tennessee's Jordan McCray swished a 3-pointer to cut UVA's lead to 31-38, but the Virginia defense was able to hold the Vols to just 5-points over the final 8 minutes of the game to ice the win.

Akil Mitchell had his 4th double double performance of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, making it his 5th in his career.

Joe Harris also had 13 points for the 8th time in 9 games this year.

Harris said, "This is a great win for us. We knew coming in that Tennessee was going to be a tough test for us. I think they're going to do really well this year in the SEC. They're a physical and talented team so for us to come out with a win, that's huge for us."

Jontel Evans made his first start of the season, but left the game late in the second half with an aggravated foot injury.

Virginia had 8 blocks against the Vols and tied its season high, which is the most under the UVA Head Coach Tony Bennett.

Head coach Tony Bennett said, "I think there's better basketball out there for us. I think there were stretches and Tennessee probably noticed that we weren't the prettiest but its a grind for us and we just keep trying to find what Virginia basketball is gonna have to look like."

Virginia improved to 7-2 and returns to action Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena against Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m.
