Food Lion Helping to Tackle Hunger in Charlottesville

Posted: Updated:

Food Lion is doing its part to tackle hunger in Charlottesville. The grocery store chain is teaming up with Feeding America to launch its "Hunger Has a Cure" campaign. This is the 10th year the company has teamed up with Feeding America to put food on the table of needy families.

"'Hunger has a Cure' is a campaign Food Lion runs where customers can donate to the local food bank, they can donate by giving money at the register, or donating canned goods, or they can purchase pre-made hunger boxes," said Wilby Hodson, Charlottesville Food Lion store manager.

The store hopes to send at least one million pounds of food to area food banks, and raise $100,000 at the register. The company says within the last several weeks it has seen a surge in customers giving back.

Donations across the area will benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, which has been hit hard by a tough economy and dwindling donations.

While tackling hunger is a year-round effort, for employees, it's warming to know that many will not go without during the holidays.

"It feels good to help the needy, especially those in the local Charlottesville area. And again Food Lion just wants to say we appreciate the local community for donating," said Hodson.

Customers can donate canned goods, purchase readymade meals, or make a financial contribution until Christmas Day. So far this year, Food Lion has donated 29 million pounds of food.
