Fire Rips Through House in Albemarle County

Posted: Updated:

An Albemarle County family is without a home after it was destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning.

The fire started in a home along Route 29 North on Monacan Trail Road.  The owner of the home says it began when he started a fire in the fireplace.  He said he stepped outside and within minutes, he realized the roof was on fire.

Investigators have confirmed that too many logs in the fireplace sparked the destructive fire. The chimney's flue caught fire, the flames spread to the roof and eventually consumed a large part of the small home.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Chip Walker said, "The first arriving unit found heavy fire showing through the roof of the residential structure."

Firefighters were on the scene for more than two hours fighting the blaze. Walker says it took longer than usual to put the fire out because the home was constructed using more concrete than wood.

Everyone inside the home made it out safely, but it took six different fire crews to put out the blaze.  Walker says even though the house was small, extra crews were necessary because of the lack of fire hydrants on this part of Monacan Trail Road.  The lack of hydrants forced crews to draft water out of nearby water sources such as ponds.

"Some of those units are off site, just trying to establish water for us to truck in to the scene here to extinguish the fire," Walker said.

The Albemarle County Fire Corps coordinated efforts with the Red Cross to secure the family a place to stay.

Kathryne Presson with the Albemarle County Fire Corps said, "Often times especially around holiday times it can be devastating to families.  Not everyone in our community has means to recover from such a devastating situation."

The groups were also able to give the family some financial help.  Walker says he does not believe the family will be able to move back into the home because of the amount of damage, but firefighters did manage to salvage some photo albums from the debris.

One lane of Route 29 was closed while crews battled the flames.
