Educators and police from across the commonwealth are coming together to keep kids safe in central Virginia's schools.
Albemarle's police chief and the director of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Project presented their collaborative efforts at a conference Tuesday.
The public school and public safety partnerships conference brought more than 160 school administrators and law enforcement together to create a vision for preventing community violence that can affect schools.
"This gives the boots on the ground, if you will, an opportunity to get together - listen to what the trends are saying, what's happening, what we know for a fact through the data - and come up with ways to creatively work together to make sure our schools are safe," said Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker.
The commonwealth's secretary of public safety admits those resources are limited in tough budget times. She says the state hopes to expand regional school crime prevention partnerships.
