Waynesboro Police Investigating Home Invasion and Shooting

Posted: Updated: Dec 4, 2012 07:30 PM

An armed intruder kicked open the front door of a 51-year-old woman just before midnight last night in Waynesboro.

The victim barricaded herself inside her bathroom, but was shot in both arms when he fired through the door. The home invasion and shooting took place in a first-floor apartment at 306 North Delphine Avenue.

Police say the woman who lives there, and her nearest neighbors, heard the front door crash open. The victim saw the suspect when she cracked open the bathroom door. Police say the intruder tried to force his way into where the victim was hiding.

"She did everything she could to try and keep herself safe, and unfortunately the suspect escalated it by the gunfire," says Capt. Kelly Walker of Waynesboro Police.

"We were half-asleep watching a movie and all of a sudden we heard a "kaboom" and boom-boom-boom all the way down the hallway. I mean, it was the loudest sound," said neighbor Desiree McCutchen.

Police say the suspect left directly after firing the two shots. He was a stocky, muscular man wearing a gray sweatshirt and something covering his face.  The victim's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Several neighbors claim she was an innocent victim caught up in drug-related violence. Police said that's a possibility and they're investigating further.

Press Release

The Waynesboro Police Department is investigating a home invasion and shooting that occurred in the city late last night.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 300 block of N. Delphine Ave.  at approximately 11:30 P.M. where they found the 51-year-old female resident  had been shot twice, once in each arm, while trying to keep an unknown intruder out of her bathroom.

The victim reported that while she was in the bathroom she heard the sound of her front door being kicked in and opened the bathroom door to investigate. She then said a large muscular male with his face covered who was wearing a gray sweatshirt confronted her so she shut the door and struggled to keep it shut as he attempted to gain entry. It was during this struggle that the suspect discharged the handgun through the door striking the victim twice. The perpetrator subsequently fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The victim was taken to Augusta Health via Rescue Squad and later transferred to UVA Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.

This case remains under investigation and police request that person(s) with information contact the department at 540-942-6675 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 322-2017.
