NBC Correspondent Sara James to Speak at UVA about New Book

Posted: Updated:

NBC correspondent and University of Virginia graduate Sara James is back in Charlottesville Monday night to share her passion for a special type of education.

James is giving a talk at Alumni Hall about her book "An Extraordinary School: Re-modeling Special Education."

James has plunged to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to report on the Titanic, traveled to Afghanistan to expose the Taliban's treatment of women, and Monday night in Charlottesville she's sharing a message that hits close to home.

Her new book highlights Port Phillip Specialist School in Melbourne, Australia that teaches children with special needs through the arts.

While the students might be playing music or painting a picture, they're also learning to count or read.

James has seen firsthand how arts education can make a difference. Her daughter Jackie goes to the school featured in the book.

"When you're a parent of a child with special needs, you have so many questions and it's a much harder path and when you get to a school that really knows what they're doing, they help you in every way both during school hours and in learning strategies that you can use after hours," said James.

James says she hopes the book will inspire schools in the United States to adopt some of the Port Phillip's teaching methods.

James says she is especially excited to be sharing this message at her alma mater.

The talk is free and open to the public and begins at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
