UVA Student Dies During Semester at Sea

Posted: Updated: Dec 2, 2012 06:41 PM

The University of Virginia says one of its students was killed Saturday afternoon in a boating accident in Dominica.

According to authorities, fourth-year student Casey Schulman was killed as she and more than 50 other students visited the island as part of the Semester at Sea program.  UVA says the death happened during an independently organized activity.

Police spokesman Richmond Valentine said Sunday that Schulman and fellow students went snorkeling on a boat owned by a local dive shop. He says the captain was apparently reversing the boat when its propeller hit Schulman, who was swimming.

She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The university's student affairs officer says she's been in touch with Schulman's family.

A service will be held on the Semester at Sea boat Sunday at 8 p.m. local time and will return to the U.S. on Friday.
