Watkins Divorce Records Reveal Prior Accusations of Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:

We are learning new details about the former Boy Scout leader accused of a child sex crime in Albemarle County.  A messy divorce between David Brian Watkins and his wife brought similar accusations more than a decade before his arrest.

At the Albemarle County Circuit Court clerk's office, the divorce records fill up an entire box with binders chock full of abuse accusations beginning in 1999.

The court records detail a rocky, 20-year marriage between Watkins and his wife, with accusations of child molestation and abuse.  The couple was divorced in 2005. The former Boy Scout troop leader has now been charged with forcible sodomy of a juvenile.

Watkins' wife also said during the proceedings that she believed he had found someone he liked or loved at scouts.  When asked what she meant, she said, "lots of little boys."

A family friend also believed her son was abused by Watkins, because Watkins wanted to spend alone time with her son, which is in direct violation of Boy Scout rules.

In the end, the court decided all the claims were unfounded following their divorce in 2006.

Meanwhile, the new police search warrants have been sealed.  Police say information continues to pour in since Watkins' arrest.  The victim hotline is 434-972-4045.

Albemarle County Police Spokesperson Carter Johnson said, "Detectives are now following up on leads and the information that they've received from the hotline and from interviews and other parts of the investigation.  So at this point it's a very much active investigation."

Thursday, Boy Scouts of America said Watkins was removed from the organization in June following a complaint of inappropriateness.  Charlottesville police say they were the ones who investigated the claim.  In the end, no charges were brought against Watkins.

Watkins is being held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.  He will have a bond hearing Monday morning.
