Suspect in Fashion Square Mall Attempted Abduction Is Denied Bond
James Kevin Key
The man police believe tried to abduct a 2-year-old girl from Fashion Square Mall remains behind bars after a bond hearing Friday afternoon.
Forty-six-year-old James Key went before Judge Frank Somerville in Culpeper County's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Key appeared for the bond hearing via video uplink from the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. The hearing took place in Culpeper because Judge Somerville was the only judge available.
In the hearing, Key's lawyer claimed he suffers from a seizure disorder and that he may have had one at the time of the incident. The judge granted a few days to provide proper documentation from a doctor and to request bail again at a later date.
The hearing revealed that Key was a University of Virginia employee for over 25 years, having worked in both the facilities and housing departments.
Key had a hotel booked in Albemarle County for a few days at the time of the incident. His attorney said Key had booked the hotel because he was planning to attend a party.
The preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 7 in the Albemarle Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
