Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Sheriff's Deputy in Culpeper

Update:  Virginia State Police say Williams was lying left of the centerline of the highway, not running in the roadway.

At approximately 7:22 last night, the Culpeper County sheriff received a 911 call for a medical emergency occurring around Route 29 southbound just north of Reva Road.

Deputy Scott E. Yeiser responded in a 2009 Crown Vic cruiser with his emergency equipment activated. As he came southbound at approximately 2/10 of a mile south of Birmingham Road (Route 740), he struck a pedestrian that was running in the roadway. The victim died at the scene as a result of the crash.

The victim is identified as Mary G. Williams, age 45, from Culpeper. The deputy was not injured in the crash.

The crash was investigated by State Trooper BJ Hobbs. He is also being assisted by the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, the Culpeper County sheriff, and a medical examiner.

The investigation is still ongoing.
