Jerad Michael Ross
The man who was shot several times outside a Fishersville motel last May and survived, has been found dead.
In May, 48-year-old Melvin Jordan was gunned down in front of the Skyline Motel, where he lived and was working as a handyman. The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says Jordan was found dead in his room on Tuesday.
Investigators had preliminary autopsy results by Wednesday, but they have not yet made them public. Prosecutors will use the final report to help them determine whether Jordan's death was a direct result of the shooting.
Friends and relatives have set up a makeshift memorial to Jordan outside his motel room. Investigators say he spent three weeks in the hospital and was still going through rehabilitation at the time of his death.
23-year-old Jerad Ross awaits trial on three felony charges related to the shooting, including attempted murder. Prosecutors say Ross is a member of the Bloods gang in Maryland, but it's unclear whether that had any connection to the shooting.
Ross is being held at the Middle River Regional Jail and has a pre-trial hearing in December. That will be his first court date with his new attorney, after firing his court-appointed lawyer two weeks ago.
