C’ville Parks and Recreation Looking for Input on Land Usage

Posted: Updated:

The Charlottesville Parks and Recreation department is trying to narrow down what needs to be done to open up a new outdoor recreation area and they're asking for your input.

The Meadow Creek stream valley, near Hydraulic Road, is under conservation easement, meaning much of the land is protected. There are some areas that are available for recreational use, which are up for discussion Tuesday night.

Tuesday's meeting is one of the last in a series. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at Greenbrier Elementary School.

The maps of the available parkland will be displayed and people will be asked to mark the best locations for the proposed improvements. The areas up for discussion are from Hydraulic Road all the way to the railroad tracks at Greenbrier Park.

Parks and Recreation says that most people agree on what improvements should be made. Tuesday night will really be about nailing down the technical aspects.

Public comments have suggested adding a bicycle trail, creating wheelchair access and building bridges over creeks to connect trails.

"We've acquired all this new land, the stream has been restored and the sewer pipe has been replaced and now we're asking the public what do they want the Parks and Rec. Department to do to improve these new lands so they can use them more functionally," said Chris Gensic, parks and trails planner.

Changes to the park near Michie Drive are also up for discussion. Possible improvements include community gardens, a playground and a dog park.

The department hopes to have city approval by next summer so it can move forward with the changes.
