Monday night, the Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia celebrated the artwork of area fourth-graders.
The students were asked to submit drawings based on the theme "Use a helmet—prevent epilepsy." Twelve drawings will be featured in the 2013-2014 school calendar for surrounding counties.
Suzanne Bischoff, the executive director for the program, says it's critical that children and families understand the importance of wearing a helmet.
"Most accidents with young children happen when they are very close by the home and if you break an arm as a young child, it is a nuisance, but when you have real serious brain injury you may have epilepsy all your life," she said.
The program has been going on for 20 years. The 12 students whose art is chosen will also present their work to the General Assembly.
