Garden Clubs Decorate C'ville Amtrak Station for the Holidays
The halls at the Charlottesville Amtrak station are decked with holiday cheer. The ladies of the Rivanna, Albemarle and Charlottesville garden clubs spent Monday morning decorating the train station.
The presidents of each of the garden clubs come together every year to get the train station ready for the holidays. This year they brought everything from a Christmas tree, to wreaths and even some pines and holly. They decorated the train station inside and out.
The tradition started because the station was one of the few places in Charlottesville that did not have any decorations for the holiday season. The clubs came together in hopes of providing a warm, cheerful welcome to the riders. They say that this gesture has generated great feedback over the years.
"We get great comments and the station master gets nice comments," said Albemarle Garden Club President Brooke Spencer. "We take the greens out of our own yards and the station does a great job of keeping them fresh and keeping them watered, and so it's just nice because you can smell the pine and it looks bright and cheerful for the holidays."
The clubs have been working together to put up the decorations at the train station for over 10 years.
In addition to decorating the station, the clubs also provide holiday decorations to nursing homes, Region Ten, and other areas in the Charlottesville community.
