World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty Receives Award for Promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation

The World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP) received an award on Friday at the Fifth Annual Global South-South Development Expo (GSSD Expo). The 2012 Expo took place at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, spotlighting more than 100 partnerships and solutions to energy insecurity and climate change challenges.

The World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP) received an award on Friday at the Fifth Annual Global South-South Development Expo (GSSD Expo). The 2012 Expo took place at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, spotlighting more than 100 partnerships and solutions to energy insecurity and climate change challenges.

Yiping Zhou, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, said the award was given in recognition of WACAP’s “special contribution to south-south and triangular cooperation.”

South-South Cooperation occurs when successful experiences in reducing poverty and promoting improved livelihoods are developed in the developing countries, and then shared, replicated and upscaled in other countries of the “South.” Triangular cooperation occurs when a development success occurs through “north-south” exchange and then is replicated from one developing country to another.

WACAP links cities throughout the North and South in an effort to promote the kinds of partnerships that result in improved livelihoods for people living in urban environments around the world. A special emphasis is placed on decentralized cooperation through these partnerships whereby the more developed cities provide resources, knowledge and technology to less-advantaged cities as a form of “urban solidarity”.

“We are honoured to be recognized for the important contribution that WACAP is making to south-south and triangular cooperation,” said Ronald Derks, WACAP focal point at the UN Development Programme. “However, it is the member cities themselves who are to be congratulated for their commitment, in solidarity, to making cities safer, smarter and more sustainable.”

The next WACAP forum will take place in Dublin, Ireland from 20-21 February 2013.
