Thanksgiving travelers are hitting the roads across the commonwealth Sunday night. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) expects Sunday evening to be one of the busiest times for drivers.
A holiday congestion tracker shows expected periods of heavy traffic. In our area, Interstate 81 southbound from Rockingham County to Staunton is expected to have some of the heaviest traffic from 6 p.m. until about 7 p.m.
The University of Virginia developed the tracker for VDOT so drivers can avoid the worst congestion during peak travel times. VDOT is suspending temporary lane closures in construction zones until noon Monday to help prevent added backups.
