Many people spent Black Friday trying to find the best bargains. Others celebrated "Buy Nothing Day."
Community Bikes in Charlottesville hosted a "Really Free Market" Friday at Random Row Books. With this event, they hoped to build community instead of honoring consumption.
Volunteers and other attendees stocked the free market with gently worn clothing and other items.
Free market volunteer Shelly Stern said, "Instead of arguing and fighting in stores over new electronics at a discount price, it's a really life-giving way of spending the day after Thanksgiving."
Everything was free whether you brought something to share or not. A craft table was also set up for those who wanted to decorate something.
The organization has been celebrating "Buy Nothing Day" for over 10 years in Charlottesville.
