Black Friday Frenzy 2012 in Albemarle & Charlottesville

Posted: Updated:

Black Friday, a time when we turn our attention from the turkey on the table to the presents under the tree, was the day retailers and die-hard shoppers were waiting for.

At 5:00 Friday morning, 50-inch televisions went on sale at Walmart and shoppers lined up to get the deal. Then at 6:30, lines at J.C. Penney went as far as the eye could see, as deal seekers bought small kitchen appliances and clothing.

The crowds at the Barracks Road Shopping Center were still thick by midday. Most of the shoppers NBC29 spoke to said they were part of the second wave; the early risers hit the store between 6 and 9 a.m.

"The atmosphere is pretty festive these days," said shopper Shere Schoener. "I mean I think everyone is looking for a deal. And I don't think a lot of people are looking to spend tons of money. I think they are looking to get the best deal that they can for what they're spending. So, it's good, it's been fun."

People who worked at Old Navy in Charlottesville said that Friday morning there was a line wrapped around the store, and customers waited in line for up to an hour and a half.
