Where to Find Thanksgiving Food Last-Minute

Posted: Updated:

No matter how thorough your grocery list might have been, there's a good chance there's something you forgot for the Thanksgiving table.  If so, there is still help available, even as late as Thanksgiving Day.

Whether you are traditionally a last-minute shopper or you just happen to forget something for Thursday's feast, there are a few places you can turn to for your 11th-hour food needs.

Every year, grocery stores are flooded with last-minute Thanksgiving shoppers. This year is no exception. Some stores are open longer than others, but all say they are prepared.

"We have a full crew on and you know, just like we do around the other holidays, so we're ready," said Geoffrey Garbaccio, a manager at the Whole Foods Market in Charlottesville.

Kroger and Giant Food will be open until 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, while Whole Foods Market and Harris Teeter are shutting down at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

"It will allow customers to come in and get some fresh bread, some last-minute items for breakfast and things like spices or produce that they didn't get today," Garbaccio said.

Those interested in eating out Thursday don't have as many options available. Most restaurants in Charlottesville will be closed for the holiday.

The Old Mill Room at Boar's Head is one of the few places that will be providing a hot meal.

"Tomorrow we'll be open all day, we have a lot of things going on at the resort," said Boar's Head chef Erinn LeClair. "We're going to be serving probably 800 to 1,000 people between all of our outlets."

They will be serving brunch first, followed by a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

"Turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce all made from scratch, and I think people definitely like the warm feeling of Boar's Head traditions and come with family to celebrate," LeClair said.

If you are looking for something a bit more casual, IHOP will be open until 8 p.m. If you want to grab food from McDonalds though, you'll have to do it before 3 p.m.

All those loyal Trader Joe's and Foods of All Nations shoppers should wrap up their shopping Wednesday. Both will be closed for Thanksgiving.
