More Stores Competing for Staff in Albemarle County

Posted: Updated:

New businesses are popping up around Albemarle County, and that means plenty of new jobs are on the way.  But it also means more retailers are competing for the same workers, and it's putting some stores in a bind.

Too many jobs to fill sounds like a pretty good problem for stores, but with the busy holiday season approaching, some retailers say they're struggling to find staff.

Before customers hit the stores at Fashion Square Mall, stores like J.C. Penney are taking on dozens of seasonal workers.

J.C. Penney store leader Karen Rogers said, "The people that we're looking for, we're looking for outstanding people that really do care about our customers."

The problem is, for the first time she can remember, Rogers is struggling to find her holiday hires.

"Out of about 28 to 30 new hires that I normally hire, I've been able to hire about eight or 10," she said.  "[That is] very unusual. We usually have an influx of holiday hires."

Rogers blames a different and highly competitive commercial landscape.  Rogers said, "A lot of the people I've interviewed had other interviews.

New stores are popping up across the street at Shoppers World and down the road at The Shops at Stonefield.  The Fresh Market, which is still under construction, is looking for close to 100 new employees when it opens early next year.

The Virginia Workforce Center says it's surprised any retailer is having trouble filling positions.  More than 3,500 people came through their offices last month looking for work.

"We're always going to have a pool of applicants for those type of retail businesses," said Elizabeth Bouldin-Clopton with Virginia Workforce Center.

It starts with bringing employers and job seekers together.  "The people that are coming in looking for jobs really do want to work," Rogers said.

And heading into the holidays, that's something Rogers values more than anything.  She said, "We make sure that our customer has a great experience, because that is the most important thing."

The Virginia Workforce Center will host workshops on December 3 and 4 to help job seekers with their applications.  The Fresh Market will hold its own career day on December 12.
