Tandem Friends Students Pack & Deliver Thanksgiving Baskets

Posted: Updated:

Even though there's encouraging economic news, the holidays are still a tight squeeze for many.  Now a Charlottesville school is doing its part to put a turkey on as many tables as possible.

Tandem Friends School packed up and delivered 25 ready-to-cook Thanksgiving baskets to families in the Charlottesville community Tuesday.  The student body came together to make this event happen for the 11th year in a row.

Boxes filled with turkeys, stuffing, rolls, desserts, and other Thanksgiving fixings were lined up ready for delivery at the Tandem Friends School Tuesday.  Students wanted to continue the tradition of providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need.

"I think it really makes their year they're able to have a full Thanksgiving dinner that they might not otherwise have been able to have," said student senate president Sydney Hockett.

The donation fund is run and organized solely by the student body.   They collected food donations as well as money to make sure every aspect was covered.

"What we tried to do is make sure that we had it segregated into days so that one Monday people brought in mashed potatoes, people brought in stuffing the next day and so forth," student volunteer Elias Bearinger said.  "By doing that we hoped to spread things out a little bit more, and then with the money donations, we bought whatever gaps and filled in the gaps that needed to be filled in."

The students double checked the baskets, then loaded up their cars and headed out to make their deliveries.  Some meals were even accompanied by cards made by some of the younger students.  Delivering the food to the families is rewarding for both sides.

Bearinger said, "It's really great, people are really thankful, it's really nice to interact with people in the community."

They say they hope to continue to grow this tradition each year.  Hockett said, "I think in the future we will strive to do up to maybe 50 boxes."

The students at the Tandem Friends School will also provide Christmas meals for families.  Some of the leftover food and money from this drive will go toward that cause.
