JABA Shining Star Preschool Relocates

Posted: Updated:

The Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) Shining Star preschool students are getting a look at their new facility.

Tuesday morning they will move into to their new expanded preschool space in the JABA offices on Hillsdale drive in Charlottesville.

Work is now complete on their new space, and it has benefits that both the kids and seniors will enjoy. It's more spacious, a more convenient location, and it will allow the preschoolers and seniors to have more interaction.

The previous Shining Star preschool was located on the second floor of the building. This made it more difficult for parents to drop their kids off. It was also difficult for seniors and students to do activities together because the adult care center is located on the first floor.

Now the new preschool is located on first floor of the building. It has its own entrance allowing easier drop off for parents, and it's right next to the adult care center, so kids and seniors will have more access to each other.

Some of the preschoolers put on hard hats and had a look at the new facility Monday, along with their parents and teachers.

Tammie Moses has a daughter in the Shining Star preschool. She said that enrolling her child in an intergenerational program was important to her. "The elders are eager to talk and reminisce about the old times, and the children are so eager to learn, and they just want to be part of each other's lives," she said.

The intergenerational aspect of the programs is part of JABA's vision. Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Gordon Walker, said he's proud of how successful such programs have been. "At JABA we recognize that aging is a life span process, and to the extent that we can bring ages together to share in the riches, the joys, the experiences, everyone benefits," he said.

JABA now has an intergenerational program in Charlottesville and Louisa County. The two programs together provide preschool for about 60 kids and adult care for about 60 seniors. Walker says that JABA is looking into expanding the programs to other areas.
