UVA’s Cancer Research Fund Thanks Family of Supporters
Volunteers from the University of Virginia's cancer research fund are giving thanks this holiday week to a family of supporters.
Members of the Patients and Friends Research Fund surprised the Lorenzoni family Monday at their store, Ragged Mountain Running Shop. The Charlottesville running shop sponsored the Women's Four Miler, which donated a record $68,000 this year to Patients and Friends to support cancer research.
Meredith Gunter, Patients and Friends steering committee co-chair, said, "Those researchers really are fabulous, but they sometimes need a little money to get them between grants or to help them move a grant along a little faster or to speed up discoveries."
Cynthia, Mark, and Audrey Lorenzoni now sport their own custom lab coats as a "thank you" from the group.
"This is a really big surprise, and we certainly don't do it for the thanks," said Cynthia. "I know from our relationships with the people at UVA, they really do appreciate and need the money we raise through the race."
The Patients and Friends group toasted the Lorenzonis with champagne in test tubes.
