Old Mills Trail Opens

Posted: Updated:

A new multiuse trail is open in Albemarle County. The county celebrated the opening of the Old Mills Trail Friday morning.

The trail has been used for years, but new upgrades make it safer. The upgrades have been in the works for over 10 years.

Things have been cleaned up and bridges have been added to make historic sites easier to navigate. Hundreds of volunteers have worked on the Old Mill Trail.

The county is hoping for a tourism boost from Old Mills Trail. Organizers say the trail is somewhat of a gem in Albemarle County.

Greenway supervisor Dan Mahon said, "Just a few steps out of the buzz of the day-to-day activity is this place where the key fishers are running around the river, great blue heron, there's some big fish in there too, but there's this natural area preserved."

The trail is three miles and runs from Darden Towe Park to just below Martha Jefferson Hospital.

The project is a big one that will eventually tie into the Fluvanna Heritage Trail. Efforts are also underway along other sections of the Rivanna River to connect it to the James River. It will eventually follow all the way down to the Chesapeake Bay.

Albemarle County Press Release

Albemarle County today announces the opening of Old Mills Trail, a 3-mile multi-use trail that connects Darden Towe Park to Martha Jefferson Hospital along the Rivanna River.

Old Mills Trail is designed for walkers, runners, hikers and bikers and offers an alternative way to cross the river for a safe connection to residential neighborhoods, shopping center and the City of Charlottesville's trails, while meeting ADA requirements for wheelchair accessibility where possible.

"We are pleased to be able to offer another trail opportunity for area residents," says Bob Crickenberger, Albemarle County Parks and Recreation Director. "This urban section of the greenway will provide much needed connectivity to area neighborhoods and businesses while spotlighting this area's rich historical interests."

Old Mills Trail has great tourism value in that it provides access to an area associated with historical interests such as Lewis & Clark and Thomas Jefferson. This publicly protected Greenway Corridor also involves a long section of a State recognized Scenic River and is identified in the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.

Old Mills Trail is a part of Albemarle County's Rivanna River Greenways and Blueways system which is emerging as a network of hiking trails, parks and river access sites that will follow the river from North Fork all the way into Fluvanna County. This trail and riparian greenway corridor is recognized by various regional trail and conservation efforts such as Albemarle County's Comprehensive Plan and the City of Charlottesville's Greenway Plan, and made possible by various partnerships including the Rivanna Conservation Society, the Rivanna Trails Foundation, State Farm, Inc., and many others.
