Cultures Merge at Monticello High School

Posted: Updated:

Students from South America got a chance Thursday to see what it's like to be a student at Monticello High School.

Before what turned into an impromptu dance party, the students got a tour of the school and met with Monticello students about planning and performing community service projects.

Milene Carbaglal, a student from Peru, said, "I think it's both the same, we try to improve the life in our communities and the students here in the USA, they do the same but in the high schools. In Peru, it's not too common to do that, but now I think we can change it."

Monticello High School is just one stop in their three-week trip in the U.S. with the World Learning program, supported by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The Charlottesville portion is led by the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. Next, they head to California and Florida to live with host families and spend two weeks in American high schools there.
