A funding fight is unfolding Thursday night in Fluvanna County.
Parents and teachers are joining forces to demand the board of supervisors fund the budget deficit the school board is facing.
The group, Focus on Fluvanna's Future, is circulating petitions to try to change the minds of supervisors and get them to cover the funding gap. Unexpected increases in costs have resulted in a $300,000 budget deficit for the school division.
Supervisors say they are not going to cover it. Last week, the school board decided to furlough staff for four days, but concerned parents say that can't be the option.
Bill Sullivan of Focus on Fluvanna's Future said, "I've had emails from teachers saying 'listen, I'm deciding between not doing health insurance so I can put food on my table. Just so I can get gas just so I can get to school.'"
The petitions started on Sunday, and so far more than 600 people have signed the one online. The group hopes to have a total of 1,000 signatures and rally parents ahead of a supervisors meeting on Tuesday.
The cuts made by the school board are supposed to go into effect January 1.
