Virginia Basketball Upset at Home by Delaware 59-53
The UVa men's basketball team was eliminated from the NIT season Tip-Off Tuesday night with a 59-53 loss to Delaware at JPJA.
Virginia shot just 35 percent from the field. The Cavaliers were led by Joe Harris' 20 points. Akil Mitchell had 15 and Darion Atkins had 11. Delaware was led by Devon Saddler and Jarvis Threatt who each had 14 points.
Virginia shot 0-9 from 3-point range in the first half. The Cavaliers only scored 15 points in the first half. UVa starting senior point guard Jontel Evans only played three minutes off the bench as he still works his way back from foot surgery. The Cavaliers are struggling without an experienced point guard.
Coach Tony Bennett says, "Its hard to live just off catch and shoot or on the perimeter whether its post feeds or penetration you have to draw the defense in and get action. We really don't have a guy unless we give him a bump off a screen right now who can do that."
If Virginia had won, they would have advanced to the tournament semifinals in New York City.
Akil Mitchell says, "Its heartbreaking to know that you had a chance to go play in Madison Square Garden and now that opportunity is gone but we have an opportunity to grow this season and our heads aren't held too low."
Virginia now has a record of 1-2. The 'Hoos next game is Saturday at JPJA against Seattle at 4pm.
