Giant Food Delivers 1,000 Turkeys to Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

There will be a turkey on the Thanksgiving table for some Shenandoah Valley homes that might have gone without.

Tuesday, Giant Food delivered 1,000 frozen turkeys to the Verona headquarters of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.  The birds will be distributed through food pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies.

Last year, the food bank bought 10,000 turkeys, but now has to rely on outside help.

"Best price we could find was $1.25 a pound," Blue Ridge Area Food Bank CEO Larry Zippin said.  "We can't afford to buy 10,000 turkeys, so this donation, and hopefully other donations, will allow us to provide turkeys to people for the holiday."

Zippin says there is still plenty of empty shelf space.  The "Helping Hands Against Hunger" campaign could help.  It gets underway next Friday.
