UVA Students Celebrate Colbert Valediction Speaker Announcement

Posted: Updated:

Students at the University of Virginia are cheering the announcement that political comedian Stephen Colbert will be the valediction speaker this year.

People handing out ice cream on the lawn Monday were wishing each other "Happy Stephen Colbert."  Students lined up on the lawn to try the Stephen Colbert-inspired Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor, "Americone Dream."

Colbert was the number one choice of the student-run valediction committee.  He has delivered the commencement addresses at Knox College and his alma mater, Northwestern University.  UVA students say they're thrilled that he's chosen Virginia this year.

"Walking through the library last night people were jumping up and down with their backpacks on and Facebook was crazy, you couldn't even navigate through Facebook without seeing Stephen Colbert's name and everyone's talking about this today too with the ice cream," said UVA student Jenna Dagenhart.

Colbert is no stranger to UVA.  His wife, Evelyn Colbert, is a 1985 drama and English UVA graduate.  In 2011, the Colberts gave a grant to the university to start the Arts Scholars program.

Because Colbert is speaking at valediction on May 18, the day before graduation, the whole community can watch the speech.  The event is free and open to the public.
