Charlottesville Celebrates Veterans Day & 250th Birthday

Posted: Updated:

The city of Charlottesville is honoring those who have served our country.  A ceremony Monday recognized central Virginia's veterans, as Charlottesville celebrates an important day in its history.

Monday, the day after Veterans Day and the city's 250th birthday, Charlottesville is remembering its past and honoring those who have fought to secure its future.

Charlottesville paused Monday to remember an important anniversary.  Founders signed Charlottesville's charter November 12, 1762.  In the years since, we have declared our independence, and brave soldiers have defended our freedom at home and abroad.

"Veterans are participants, living participants in United States and also world history," said Ben Shaw with the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program.

That's why Monday the city of Charlottesville and American Legion Post 74 paused to honor heroes.  "We remember the veterans of all American wars," said Ron Fischer with American Legion Post 74.  "We remember those who died, we remember those who were injured, and we remember those who served."

The day was used to honor people like Shaw, a former Marine Corps sergeant.  After a contentious and divisive election season, Shaw says Veterans Day is a chance for the country to remember what's important.

"It doesn't matter who is in charge of the country, it does not matter our personal political inclinations or those of the general public," said Shaw.  "We're just, there's a threat, we're going after it. We're still warriors."

Warriors who fight to ensure places like Charlottesville are around long enough to celebrate.

"Serving in the military was not just a job in which I take a lot of pride, it's also who I am, it's what I'm doing. I am a Marine, I'm a warrior, I'm a United States Marine, and this is what I do," Shaw said.

The ceremony was a patriotic way to remember where we come from, and what it takes to defend our home, on Charlottesville's 250th birthday.
