Virginia Cider Week Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:

Central Virginia may be known for wineries and breweries, but now it's time for another beverage to take center stage.

The state is one of the largest producers of apples in the country, and for the first time, cider is getting its own week of recognition here in the commonwealth. Virginia Cider Week kicks off Friday, giving Central Virginians a new way to enjoy apples.

Virginia is only the second state to have a cider week.

The people at Castle Hill Cider are gearing up for all the events. They say making cider is making a comeback both in Virginia and worldwide.

"It's just a new thing to most people, so to really have a time to focus on it, really go and taste a lot of them and really get an idea of what cider is, it was the primary beverage of America up until Prohibition and it's a great chance to rediscover it," said Stuart Madany, a cider maker at Castle Hill.

Events for Virginia Cider Week kick off Friday evening with food and tastings at Feast! in Charlottesville from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Throughout the week there will be workshops, tastings, and parties.
